New Year in Spain

If you were lucky enough to be in Spain over New Year you will no doubt have had a great time as the country loves to party.

For those who have yet to experience a Spanish New Year, here’s a couple of the local traditions to give you a flavour of what you missed.

12 Lucky Grapes

Grapes are eaten on the cusp of midnight, New Year’s Eve, to bring good luck in the coming year. One grape with each of the 12 chimes at midnight. We did hear of some folks taking this to a new level. Wine is of course made from grapes. Some decided to take 12 ‘sips’ on wine instead. Not quite your ‘five a day’ but hey ho.

Right into the New Year

In many parts of Spain it is considered lucky to literally start the year on your right foot. So as the clock starts to chime you should be ready to step forward with your right foot. That might be dancing around a pool, entering a bar, crossing the threshold or simply stepping forward to celebrate. Whatever you are doing it’s right foot first.

Now if you mix the two traditions….. well that could be fun, could be messy….. and would need repeating all again an hour later if you were to celebrate a British New Year on the same night.
